Frequently Asked Questions
Actinic keratosis (AK) is a rough, scaly patch or lesion on the skin caused by years of prolonged sun exposure. AKs are among the most common conditions treated by dermatologists and are considered a precursor to skin cancer if left untreated. They typically appear on the face, scalp, neck, hands, forearms, and shoulders — areas with the highest lifetime sun exposure.
Most people describe AK patches as rough, dry, or sandpaper-like to the touch. Some lesions itch, burn, or feel tender. Others are painless. In some cases, a thick, horn-like growth called a cutaneous horn can develop. Color varies from skin-toned to red, brown, or yellowish-black. If a patch on sun-exposed skin feels persistently rough and will not go away, it should be evaluated.
AK itself is not skin cancer, but it is considered a precancerous condition. A percentage of untreated AK lesions can progress to squamous cell carcinoma, the second leading cause of skin cancer deaths in the United States. Early treatment significantly reduces that risk. If you have visible AK lesions, you may also have UV damage not yet visible on the surface, which is why ongoing monitoring matters.
People most at risk are fair-skinned adults over 50 with a history of significant sun exposure — particularly those who spent time outdoors for work or recreation without sun protection. A history of sunburns, living in sunny climates, or outdoor occupations all increase risk. People who have had prior AK lesions removed are also at elevated risk of developing new ones, since the underlying UV damage to the skin is cumulative and permanent.
Dermatologists typically treat AK with cryotherapy (liquid nitrogen), prescription topical creams such as 5-fluorouracil or imiquimod, photodynamic therapy, or chemical peels. Each has tradeoffs. Cryotherapy is fast but requires an office visit, can be painful, and may leave a white mark. Prescription creams are applied over weeks and often cause significant redness and peeling. Many patients with multiple lesions find these options expensive, time-consuming, or uncomfortable over repeated treatments.
AKti-Clear is a botanically-infused dermatological skincare solution formulated for use on actinic keratosis and abnormal skin lesions caused by sun damage. Its primary active ingredient is Sanguinaria canadensis (Bloodroot), extracted using a patent-pending concentration process. The result is a highly concentrated solution — one small drop applied once daily for three days is the complete treatment protocol for a single lesion.
When applied to a sun-damaged lesion, AKti-Clear's concentrated botanical compounds interact with the affected tissue. Within hours, the treated area may change color. Between 6 and 24 hours after application, a small amount of fluid may appear at the surface as the skin begins to debride. A scab typically forms and falls off naturally within 12 to 15 days, revealing new healthy tissue underneath.
AKti-Clear contains Water, Benzoic Acid (preservative), Zinc Glycinate (skin-soothing), MSM (skin repair support), Sanguinaria Canadensis — Bloodroot (primary active botanical), Urea (moisturizing and skin-softening), Annona Muricata — Soursop Fruit Extract (antioxidant), Sodium Chloride, and Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (texture stabilizer). The active compounds are extracted via a patent-pending process that produces a highly concentrated botanical solution.
Apply one small drop of AKti-Clear directly to the lesion once per day for three consecutive days. Keep the treated area covered throughout the process. Beginning on day four, apply the included AK Wound Wash — a naturally derived lipid spray — twice daily to support healing. Continue the Wound Wash until the scab falls off naturally, typically between day 12 and day 21. Do not force or pick the scab. Allow it to detach on its own.
The application protocol is three days. The healing process that follows typically takes 12 to 21 days. Once the scab falls off, the new skin underneath may appear slightly pinker than the surrounding skin. This is normal and temporary. If pinkness persists, silicone scar tape can help the area blend as the new skin matures.
AKti-Clear can be used on most areas of the body including the face, scalp, neck, hands, forearms, shoulders, arms, chest, and back. It should not be used in or very near the eyes, on or near the lips, or on the genitals. It is for external use only and should not be applied to open wounds or active sores. Use on the scalp may result in temporary hair loss in the treated area, which typically resolves as healing completes.
Each AKti-Clear bundle includes three ampules, with each ampule containing enough solution for one small-to-mid-sized lesion. If you have multiple lesions, you would need one ampule per lesion. For larger lesions, we recommend applying it to one small section at a time. Contact us for advice on the right quantity to order.
AKti-Clear is not a replacement for professional medical evaluation. If you have not had your lesions diagnosed, confirm with a dermatologist that what you have is actinic keratosis before using AKti-Clear. If any lesion bleeds, grows rapidly, or changes significantly in a short period, see a doctor promptly.
AKti-Clear is classified and marketed as a cosmetic skincare product under FDA regulations. It is not an over-the-counter drug, prescription drug, or medical device. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, consult a healthcare professional before using AKti-Clear.
Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep out of reach of children. Once an ampule is opened, it should be used within one week.
Yes. Limit direct sun exposure during the treatment and healing period. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen, wear protective clothing such as hats, and avoid peak sun hours when possible.
Some discomfort during application is not unusual. If pain becomes severe, persistent, or concerning, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional. Over-the-counter pain relief may help manage mild discomfort.
Do not use AKti-Clear if a skin area is actively bleeding, rapidly changing in size, color, or shape, or not healing. These are signs that require prompt evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional.
